First Aid Care for Major Open Wounds
- Call 9-1-1 or the designated emergency number immediately and then take steps to control the bleeding until help arrives
- Cover the area with a sterile gauze pad or other clean dressing and apply direct pressure with your gloved hand until the bleeding stops.
- Apply a bandage over the dressing to maintain pressure on the wound and to hold the dressing in place
