Assisting with an inhaler

  • Verify the medication is for quick relief. If it is not, do not use it.
  • Check the expiration date. If it is expired do not use it.
  • Shake the inhaler.
  • Remove the mouthpiece cover.
  • Attach the spacer if they use one.
  • Attach the spacer with mask if they use one.
  • Have the person inhale 3 to 5 seconds while administering the medicine.
  • Have the person hold their breath for a count of 10.
