Decontaminating surfaces and equipment

Decontaminating surfaces and equipment

Any surfaces or equipment that are contaminated should immediately be closed off to the public and properly decontaminated. PPE should always be worn when decontaminating an area or piece of equipment.

If blood or OPIM is spilled then the area should be closed off. Sharp objects within the spill should be picked up using a disposable scoop, tongs, or two pieces of cardboard. Never use your hands to pick up sharp objects within a contaminated spill.

The spill can be cleaned with a towel or fluid-absorbing powder. Create a disinfectant solution using 10% bleach and 90% water to cover the area after being wiped up. Always wear eye protection and gloves when cleaning and ensure the area is well-ventilated. The disinfectant should remain on the contaminated surface for at least 10 minutes before being wiped up and dried using paper towels.

Dispose of the materials used to clean the area inside of an identifiable biohazard container. Use a sealable bag or container if a biohazard container isn’t available. Always ensure the materials are handled and disposed of properly and carefully.
