How to limit exposure
Any equipment that’s used to prevent infection from bloodborne pathogens is known as personal protective equipment (PPE). Examples include:
- Latex-free disposable gloves
- CPR breathing barriers
- Face masks/face shields
- Protective eyewear
Although it is not considered PPE, washing your hands can also aid in preventing infections. This applies even if gloves were worn when giving treatment. To properly wash your hands after treatment:
- Rinse both hands with water
- Apply soap on the wrists, hands, and under the fingernails
- Allow soap to stay on hands for at least 20 seconds
- Rinse both hands thoroughly
Hand sanitizer containing alcohol can also be used if soap and water are not readily available.
Apply the recommended amount of hand sanitizer to the wrists, hands, and under the fingernails until it’s dry. Wash your hands as soon as soap and water are available.
