What to do during an exposure incident
An exposure incident is when the skin is broken with a needle or when blood or OPIM comes into contact with:
- The eyes
- The mouth
- The nose
- Broken skin anywhere on the body
If you are involved in an exposure incident:
- Wash with soap and water if the skin is exposed
- Flush with water if the mouth or nose is exposed
- Inundate with water or saline for 20 minutes if the eyes are exposed
Alert EMS or your healthcare provider of the incident
If the incident occurs at work then immediately alert your supervisor
If the incident occurs at work then receive follow up care based on the exposure control plan
